Days till Summer Solstice
& MMP Convention
I honor the man for his message. His message to me was his sequence of exercises called his mat work, that was in place, documented by him, before he ever got on the boat to come to America.
I may be the only one who sees his original work the way I do, but for me, I honor the man who pointed to complete coordination of body, mind and spirit through the sequence of exercises he choreographed. I get something out of Pilates that nothing else, ever, has given me. Such a tool! Such an insight! Such peace, from a body, mind and spirit uncoordinated.
When I point to the ideal within the original work of Joseph Pilates, it's his work. It's his ideal. I feel the ideal. In my body, in moment of the doing. What's better than that?
Along my Pilates path I developed an image to represent the physics of human body dynamics, trademarked it, and even though it's technically the Michael Miller Trademark, everybody refers to it as Cornu. Cornu points to Cornu Tension, a means of getting uniform usage, required to fulfill Joe's promise of uniform development. So, Cornu is a handy tool to get to uniform development required in Pilates, but it applies to all human body dynamics.
I accept all blame and criticism. I take all the responsibility. I came up with Cornu and came to understand it better through you, but after all the acknowledgements of the thousands who have helped me along the way, and taking all the blame and criticism and responsibility, comes the credit, the credit due the artist, the accolades due the scientist. (no equation for Cornu Tension yet, but my math department is working on it)
It's Joe's idea, and my image. That's what you get from Michael Miller Pilates. And, as Michael Miller Pilates, I can never be grateful enough to Joe and Clara, and Romana, and Bruce, and Kathy, and Maggie and Ron, and Alan, and Debora for helping me get out of Pilates what I so needed--complete coordination of body, mind and spirit. I'm also grateful for all those on my travels that found a kindred spirit and took to heart Joe's message, some even to the point at one time or another of being an affiliate. And I'm grateful for my love of Pilates because it brought me Cornu. Cornu lives within me, a tension I tune at will. Always aware of being a fish swimming through an ocean of air.
On this day I honor Joseph Pilates-the man.
On the Summer Solstice I honor Pilates-the message.
For me, it's impossible to honor the one without the other.
