The MICHAEL MILLER trademark is a symbol of ideal posture and perfect body dynamics rooted in the physics of spiral movement found in galaxies, whirlpools, shells, wind and light. By choosing the attitude of natural and counter-balancing forces in our own body we can we reduce the stress of gravity and move pain free with ease and grace.
"Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. Our interpretation of physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure."
Return to Life Through Contrology
by Joseph H. Pilates and William John Miller
This email is to all my licensed affiliates, Cornu Core students, and you...because you're reading it. It's been awhile since I've written because I've been broadcasting on Facebook focused on what it takes to survive as a Pilates instructor. My survival routine is a daily Reformer workout followed by a broadcast most weekdays. Lately, in my broadcasts, I've talked about the convention, two waves, and the core--the three things this email is about.
This year's MMP Convention was on June 20 at 10:24 pm MDT. A storm came up from the Southeast to the Northwest (opposite my assumption of the normal direction of weather to come through Boulder, from Northwest to Southeast.) Good thing I was the only one who showed up! Rain, serious wind, threatening lightning. The release of balloons on glow sticks looked more like tracers through the trees. It was thrilling, and a clear reminder about staying in observation of the conditions to survive.
The 2018 convention is in 172 days!
Arrive no later than Wednesday, June 20 2018 Get settled; get some rest; and up way early to meet at Lost Gulch Overlook at 4:07 AM! (That's in the morning!) I'll be there to hand out Certificates of Attendance if you've paid for one in advance.
I usually lay supine, head to North, feet to South, exhale into the moment, intentionally trigger instinctual inspiration coming out of the moment, and pretend that I can feel the shift in the planets path. The point is observing the change. Listening. Concentrating. (Without observation of change all timing efforts would be lost.)
I suggest you plan ahead. Google all the Pilates studios in this area. Pick the ones you might want to offer a workshop in and write them to see if they're interested. Some may; some may not. Depends upon how far you're travelling, and what your workshop is about.
If you don't want to teach you can always take. Which is what I suggest you do, teach or take, after we have brunch Thursday morning at the Boulderado. You'll have Thursday afternoon and Friday to explore and we'll meet up again Saturday for a soirée at the Boulderado.
Sure, attending the MMPC is a good excuse to come to Boulder and party down, but it's also a way to honor the man's method that means so much to humanity. You add your light to the light of the method. You show you know his work has an essence of its own. You show you know about human capacities in body, mind and spirit.Honor the man on his birthday, his method on the solstice. To me there's a difference. I'm pointing to the difference, have been my whole life. To what extent you see it or understand it, isn't up to me. All I can do is lay it out there as cleanly as possible as frequently as possible and hope that spaced repetition sinks in before I do.
See you at the Michael Miller Pilates Convention 2018

If you can't join us in body,
I hope you join us in mind and spirit.
The First Wave
The 10,000 things
The flood of new people and new expressions of Pilates feels overwhelming, is overwhelming. I am watching Pilates be presented to whole cultures as fragmented, crude, and misunderstood.
The First Wave is this tsunami of all things Pilates, the flood of the Pilates 10,000 things. Pilates continues to expand its expression becoming anything to anybody. The more meaningless it becomes the more I feel swept away and the sadder I get as though I lost something special.
The tsunami of Pilates overwhelms my sense of self, what it means to be a Pilates instructor. This is the First Wave of Pilates becoming the 10,000 things. Like a tsunami rushing ashore jumbling everything up with it. The thousands of impressions, expressions and interpretations of Pilates makes Pilates seem to be losing any sense of itself. To me this feels like a pressure to stay connected to what is special about Pilates.
I feel pressure to accept Pilates as everything and anything. I don't see Pilates defending itself! Is not presented as having an essence of its own, and that is the reason for the pressure. There has to be some higher ground.
The Second Wave
Seeking High Ground
The Second Wave is sure to come following the nature of the first. The Second Wave of Pilates will be the people climbing to higher ground to escape the First Wave. They will be looking for something that makes their Pilates better than the jumbled impressions out there. Some will care more about who they are and who they know/trained with. Some will seek to diversify what they offer. Some will want to know what it is, why it is what it is, to understand it better, know it deeper, and find exercises they haven't experienced yet. They will go to higher ground to get away from the press of meaningless Pilates to find a place where they can thrive and feel better about themselves and what they teach.. What the target is, and how to hit it. Planning for the Second Wave can help you survive both waves. Perhaps even prosper while others are swept away.
Weather both waves, thrive through both waves as a Michael Miller Pilates Licensed Affiliate (MMP LA). Michael Miller Pilates is the high ground that everyone will be headed towards.
It's not just my point of view. Know it or not, the core is what it is-a grip at the hips. Not an image, not an impression, just the fact of the biology trying to survive in the physics. The Core is a grip at the hips. It's a fact. Wrap your head around it, quit pretending you can ignore reality. It's a huge step, a whole new way of looking at the body.
The "Core" is the grip at the hips. The "Powerhouse" is the grip at the hips. The core, the powerhouse, the grip is a "condition." It is the condition of spiraling in, just like your fingers curl in to make a grip, so does the musculature of your hips spiral in to create a grip.Know it or not, this grip at the hips is what matters. It gives you control of your hips and sets up control throughout your body. It's not just the way I look at it. It's the way it is...know it or not.
The Core is a grip at the hips.
The Powerhouse is the same grip at the hips.
The grip is a condition that determines a location.
Get your head wrapped around it. Michael Miller Pilates transcends the old way of looking at the body and doing Pilates.
So, that's the three things! The Convention, the Two Waves, and the Core.
We are few. We not only carry the flame, we not only pass on the torch, we teach everyone how to make fire!
