Michael Miller Pilates makes sense. sm
Cornu Tension is real.
This email probably won't be as good as the last one, so I encourage you to read the last one again if you find this one lacking.
Ask not, what Pilates can do for you. Isn't it obvious? Ever since you fell in love with Pilates you've been falling ever since. First you found it in your body; then you found it helping others fall the way you have. Pilates has done for you what nothing else has. It has given you an experience like nothing else. It has given you the satisfaction of sharing that experience with others. It has given you a means to earn a living, modest though it may be, to help others completely coordinate their body, mind and spirit.
Ask what you can do for Pilates. Do you even know that there's a difference? Between what Pilates has done for you and what you can do for Pilates? What you can do for Pilates is stand up and speak out for what makes Pilates-Pilates. It goes beyond you and your delivery of the message. It goes to pointing out the message. Like stepping aside with who you are and honoring what it is, regardless of who you are.
Thank god for that, because in my case, I'm full of fault and many have rejected my view of Pilates because of their judgement of me. Still, my view of Pilates is what matters. Why? Because it's my view? No, because it is the truth. And stands above and beyond any other view that's out there.
You might mistakenly presume that your best interpretation of Pilates is all you have to give. That it's enough for you to call what you do Pilates. From my point of view, that's just taking what Pilates can do for you, and saying thank you very much without even a howdie do.
Why? Because nobody has really explained Pilates the way I have. Pilates has become anything to anybody, and saying that you teach Pilates and leaving it at that is just taking what Pilates can do for you and using it for yourself.
What you can do for Pilates is point out what is Pilates that goes way beyond you. Beyond me. To what it is, in and of itself.
That's Michael Miller Pilates, not because I say so, but because Michael Miller Pilates is the only brand of Pilates that shines the light on Pilates. Real Pilates. Authentic Pilates. Classical Pilates. All those adjectives are attached to economic motivations that are stuck in a ritualistic interpretation meant to achieve distinction that falls short of delivering what is truly real, truly authentic and truly classical. It's just mime and mimicry at one level until you rise to a level of understanding that transcends heritage, lineage, and hearsay.
This is Michael Miller Pilates. Sorry I couldn't be a better person to reveal the perfect message, but to discount the message because of the messenger, is truly to just embrace Pilates for what it can do for you.
I've tried all along to establish a brand that you could associate with that would give you the shield and sword to defend and defeat all who would only use Pilates for what it could do for them. Hasn't gotten anywhere. Too much of what Pilates can do for you, with little or no interest in what you can do for Pilates. Maybe because it's tough to make the distinction between the two.
I'm much more towards the end of my ability to make my profession than the beginning. I've been blessed to enjoy everything that Pilates has done for me. Helped me, helped you understand Pilates, but perhaps failed to help you see what you can do for Pilates.
Can you really say "I teach Pilates" and have it mean as much as "I teach Michael Miller Pilates?" I know, I know. I am Michael Miller. I am biased. It's only my ego that seeks to make a difference. Really? You really think so? Then when anyone and everyone out there is saying that they teach Pilates which can mean taking Pilates for whatever it can do for them, how do you distinguish? Michael Miller Pilates is the only brand of Pilates that explains the truth of Pilates. If you've got something better, trot it out, shout it out, and I'll be first in line to hold it higher.
My time is limited. Your time is limited. During that time there's so much that Pilates has done and will continue to do for me, and for you. What you, and I, can do for Pilates is stand up for the truth in Pilates that has nothing to do with you, or me, and everything to do with what it is.
Every year, for almost a decade now, I've hosted a convention that meets at the same place at the same time that's meant to honor the truth in Joe's message. Summer Solstice, right down to the second. Lost Gulch Overlook, six miles West of Boulder on the 40th Parallel (Baseline Road).
When I can no longer show up, maybe it will be easier for you to show up, to do something for Pilates. Certainly, it was that way for Joe. No reason to expect it will be any different for me.
So, if you can't really see what I'm talking about, perhaps the day will come in the future where you'll be able to distinguish what Pilates has done for you versus what you can do for it.
