"makes sense"

Pilates Fear 2009

Fear sells. Let's see if I can sell you...
I'm afraid...
I'm afraid of losing my job.
I'm afraid of losing my studio.
I'm afraid of my competition.
I'm afraid of big brands pushing me out.
I'm afraid of dilutors.
I'm afraid of blenders and extenders.
I'm afraid I'm not good enough.
I'm afraid of losing my prestige.
I'm afraid I really don't know what I'm doing.
I'm afraid I won't get to teach what is important to me.
I'm afraid of losing my claim of legitimacy.
I'm afraid of my certification becoming meaningless.
I'm afraid of big organizations I joined to protect me will ultimately control me.

I'm not afraid because...
I'm not afraid because I am Joe. (1880 - 1967)
I'm not afraid because I learned directly from Joe. (first generation tradition)
I'm not afraid because I learned from somebody that learned from Joe. (second generation tradition)
I'm not afraid because I'm part of a big brand that will protect me. (tribalism)
I'm not afraid because I've been teaching longer than you have. (presumption)
I'm not afraid because I'm rich and nothing will ever change that. (aristocracy)
I'm not afraid because I am Michael Miller. (1952 - still breathing)
I'm not afraid because I learned the idea directly from Michael Miller. (first generation idea)
I'm not afraid because I learned from somebody that learned directly from Michael Miller. (second generation idea)
I'm not afraid because I learned the idea, from I can't remember where, but it made so much sense to me and my clients that they love working with me and say that I'm the best Pilates instructor they've ever had.

You can learn the idea on YouTube here.

The Idea and The Image

There are two gifts from Michael Miller, the idea and the image.
The idea explains the point of pilates; the image shows how to make the point.
The definition of pilates as an idea is uniform, eccentric, loading, flowing through progressive patterns of movement.
The image illuminates how the body moves. Creating endpoints of tension makes alignment perceptible and fluorescence possible. The point of pilates is fluorescence.
We are all complete packages.
Each of us has body, mind, and spirit.
The target of pilates is to completely coordinate the three.
The image helps you get there.

Why the order matters

is because Joe says it does. So look at the list of exercises in Joe's book (Return to Life through Contrology) and compare it to the Michael Miller Pilates Mat List of Exercises. How do they compare? Now compare another brand's list of mat exercises and how do they compare?

Cohesion

There's cohesion to the original work. It fits together; it makes a point.

Yoga ain't Yoda

Pilates cannot be assimilated.

The beauty of pilates is
that you can embrace the ideal of our existence
without submission to interpretation.

Breathing

In this video clip a mime walks across the stage in one state of breathing and adjusts to another.

Note how the more fluid the breath, the more the breath leads the rest of the movement. The breath begins first, either in the inhale or the exhale, and the rest of the organism follows.

Michael talks about the basis of the idea

The three things direct from Joe that are the basis of the idea.

The sequence of the mat, his definition of his method, and his promise.
